J. Frederick Whaley, 92, of West Lafayette, passed away at 7:30 pm Wednesday, September 2, 2015 at Westminster Health Care. He was born February 27, 1923, in Newton County, to the late John Frederick and Mary Ruth Brown Whaley. Fred graduated from Klondike High School and on April 10, 1949 he married Eleanor Wilson in Lafayette. She passed away September 5, 2005. Fred was a hog and grain farmer in Tippecanoe County and was also a salesman for Pioneer Seed for over 30 years. He was a member of Dayton United Methodist Church and was active in the Tippecanoe County Pork Producers and volunteered at the 4-H Fair. J. Fred also loved to garden and enjoyed providing produce to friends and neighbors. Surviving are a son, Richard Whaley (wife Jenny) of Fishers, two daughters, Carol Sharp (husband Jim) of Lafayette and Jean Smidt of Little Rock, AR. Also surviving are seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Faye Carlson, Ruth Strunk and Janice Moore. Friends will be received from 12 noon until the time of the service at 2:00 pm on Monday, September 7, 2015 at Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel, 400 Twyckenham bvld. Lafayette, IN 47909 with Pastor Earl Owen officiating. Burial will follow at Concord Cemetery.
