John F. Thieme, 85, of Lafayette, died at 5:45 PM Saturday, January 25, 2014 at Creasy Springs Health Campus. He was born September 28, 1928, in Lafayette, to the late Frederick J. and Josephine Clifford Thieme. He graduated from St. Joseph's Academy and attended Purdue University. On September 17, 1955 he married Mary Carolyn Aretz in Lafayette. She passed away April 3, 2001. John was a fourth generation owner and beverage distributor in the Greater Lafayette area. His dedication to his customers was legendary. John was a member of St. Boniface Church and involved in the Serra Club, was a 4th degree Knight of Columbus and did Perpetual Adoration at St. Elizabeth Chapel. He was a member of the American Legion Post 11, Eagles, Moose, and Elks Lodges, Breakfast Optimist Club, Indiana Beverage Association, Teamsters Local Beverage Distributors # 135, Central Catholic Athletic Association, 21st Century Club, John Purdue Club, St. Joseph College Fellow, the Circus Historical Society, and the local Democratic Party. In 2009 John was awarded the Marquis de Lafayette and a key to the City by Mayor Roswarski. He enjoyed spending time with people, golfing, bowling, model trains, tailgating, and watching his grandchildren's activities. Surviving are his children; Theresa Thieme, Karen Compliment (James), John Thieme (Debbie) all of Lafayette, Shannon Bordenet (Tim) of West Lafayette and Brian Thieme (Sara) of Lafayette. Two brothers and two sisters; James Thieme of Sunnyvale, CA, Barbara Schrader (James) of Lafayette, J. Thomas Thieme of Carmel and Josephine Deible (Richard) of Oswego, IL. Also surviving are sixteen grandchildren; Glenn, James, Nicole, TJ, Emily, Chase, David, Matt, Maria, A.J., Caroline, David, Megan, Michael, Tyler and Molly and a great granddaughter Amelia. John was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law Kathy Thieme. He was a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather and “Pal ” to all. Visitation will be from 5:00 until 8:00 pm Wednesday, January 29, at Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel 400 Twyckenham Blvd. Lafayette, IN 47909. A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 am Thursday, January 30, 2014 at St. Boniface Church with Fr. Clayton Thompson officiating. Burial will follow at St. Boniface Cemetery. In lieu of flowers those wishing may contribute to the Central Catholic Athletic Capital Campaign at 2410 S. 9th St. Lafayette, IN 47909.
