John ?Jack? D. Cheesman, 90
West Point – John ?Jack? D. Cheesman of West Point passed away June 11, 2010 at home surrounded by his wife, children and grandchildren.
Born August 15, 1919 in Lafayette, he was the son of the late Isaac Cheesman and Laura Hartfield Cheesman.
He graduated from West Point High School in 1937. He attended Purdue University until he was drafted into the United States Army in 1941. While in the Army, he earned a Military Training Certificate as a Radio Technician from the University of Hawaii. After serving four years, he was honorably discharged October 17, 1945.
On October 26, 1947 Jack and Vonda Maitlen were married at the Methodist Church in New Richmond, Indiana.
Jack and his wife joined his parents in ownership and management of the West Point Telephone Company, Inc. The Cheesman Family operated the Telephone Company for 60 years. In addition, he was owner/operator of I.H and J.D. Cheesman Plumbing which is now in its 4th generation as Cheesman Inc.
He was a former member of the West Point Lions Club, Indiana Telephone Association, and currently held the office of vice-president of the West Point Cemetery Association.
Jack greatly enjoyed spending time with his family. He especially enjoyed the sporting events of his grandchildren as well as Big Ten sports. He will be remembered for his devotion to his family and his wonderful sense of humor. Jack (Granddad) was dearly loved by his family and will be truly missed.
Surviving with his wife are a daughter, Jacqueline Cheesman Kerkhoff (husband: Gary) of Romney and a son, Gary L Cheesman (companion: Coralene ?Corky? Byers) of West Point. Grandchildren include: Jill Shambaugh, Kelli Burton (husband: Mike), Kristi Kendall (husband: Jon), Isaac Cheesman (wife: Amy) and Kayla Cheesman (fiancé – Noah Warren). Great grandchildren include: Bailey & Jackson Burton; John Shambaugh; Ashlyn, Kaylyn, & Madalyn Cheesman; and Emily Kendall.
Visitation will be 5-8pm Sunday, June 13, 2010, at Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel. Funeral Service 10am Monday at Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel, Rev. Jeff Smith officiating. Burial will be at West Point Cemetery. To Vonda and the entire Cheesman family,

It is with my deepest sympathy that I send you my condolences. I am sorry I could not be there in presence, but please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you not only today, but in the days ahead.

It has been nothing but a pleasure for me to know Jack, Vonda and the entire Cheesman family. Jack was a special man who had a lot of love and respect for his family and community. It was not only evident through his life, but also by the legacy he has passed down to his kids and grandkids. Jack Cheesman placed great priority on faith, family and the community in which he lived. And because of that, many lives and the entire community of West Point have benefited.

Jack was a man who loved his entire family (especially his wife). I always enjoyed seeing Jack and his smile. I am very appreciative to have had the opportunity to get to know the entire Cheesman family and especially Jack today as you celebrate his life.

PS - Vonda, Jackie and Gary C. - Keep pressing on and look to God for your strength. He always provides. You are in my prayers. Thank you for making me feel like a part of your family. If there is anything I can do, please let me know.
