Darrell Parker left a message on July 27, 2020:
Family, Dr. John Carlson also supervised my PhD dissertation which I finished in 1984. I will never forget my first dissertation proposal. His response was that the idea had merit. Now I needed to go think for a year. He reminded me that the goal was to add to the sum of human knowledge. Since Purdue I have worked at Clemson University, Winthrop University, Georgia Southern University, USC Upstate, Western Carolina University, and today am President of Limestone University. His reach extended through academia and truly has contributed to the sum of human knowledge.

Dear Family, John was my promotor of my PH.D. thesis back in 1983. I am still gratefull for his fatherly oversight, little interference, only some guidance on how to handle scientific issues. Since then I have been professor at Erasmus University, Teaxas A&M, KU Leuven, Chapman University and back to Erasmus University. About four years ago John and his new wife visited The Netherlands. Upon this occasion I had the privelige to show them around the Van Gogh museum and have a marvelllous lunch afterwards. I will remember him as a nice scholar and doctor father as they say in Germany.
