Jean Day of West Lafayette, Indiana passed away on February 20, 2018 at the age of 93. She was born on September 15, 1924 in Winchester, Kentucky to Harlan Morgan Hurst and Martha McGinnis Hurst as their only child. The family lived in several states, including Texas and Washington DC, before settling in Lake Worth, Florida in the early 1930s. Jean graduated from Lake Worth High School and from Florida Atlantic University, with a BA in History.
Jean married John R. Day and they had three children. She was a homemaker, but also worked for Instructional Television in Boca Raton and Doncaster Clothing. She was active her whole adult life in PEO promoting women’s education, and in political activities. In mid-life, she moved to Cashiers, North Carolina, where she was a member of the Cashiers United Methodist Church and sang in the church choir. Jean loved sharing her beautiful mountain home with family and friends.
Jean enjoyed traveling in the United States, particularly to her children’s homes in Colorado, Indiana, and Maine, and in several other states including Hawaii. She also traveled in Europe and the Caribbean.
With advancing age, Jean moved to West Lafayette to be near her son and his family. She attended 1st United Methodist Church and sang in the choir. Then she later joined her son’s church, Covenant Church, to worship her Lord with her family. She lived happily for over 12 years at Westminster Village, where she participated regularly in the programs and particularly enjoyed singing with the Village Voices and going to Vespers and weekly Bible study. She also enjoyed attending the Lafayette Symphony and the Lafayette Citizens Band and volunteering for the Symphony Guild. Additionally, she was an avid sports fan and faithfully attended her grandchildren’s high school and college soccer and basketball games.
Jean is survived by her son, Dr. Harlan Day (Heather), of West Lafayette, Indiana; her daughter, Melissa Hammock (Joe), of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and her daughter, Barbara Crossman (David), of Moldova, Eastern Europe and Florida. She is also survived by her nine grandchildren: Jason Crossman (Rei), Brielyn Pritchard (Jordan), Dr. Stephen Day (Sarah), Peter Day (Marina), Timothy Day, Andrew Day (Luz Marina), Jeffrey Hammock (Claire), Jessalyn Williams (Mark), and Michael Hammock (Kerry). And she is further survived by her eleven great-grandchildren: Ari, Val, Colby, Lucas, Clara, Daisy, Calvin, Robbie, Rookston, Raelyn, and Evelyn.
A memorial service, which will include the hymns she loved, will be held at Covenant Church on Saturday, March 10 at 3:30 p.m. with Pastor Tom Johnson officiating.
