Jean Huntington Phillips Hicks, age 94, died peacefully in her sleep on February 22, 2018, at Rosewalk Village in Lafayette. Jean was born on May 21, 1923, in Garner, Iowa. Her parents were Earl Huntington and Dora Bradwell Phillips. Raised in a small farming community, Jean attended college at the University of Minnesota, where she completed an advanced five year program in Public Health Nursing. Her first job was as Public Health Nurse in Minneapolis where she made home visits on her bicycle. After that she became Director of the Student Health Service at St. Cloud's Teachers College, where she enjoyed working with G.I.s returning from WWII. It was in St. Cloud where Jean met Mason Adelbert Hicks, whom she married.
They moved to Duluth, Minnesota, where Mason taught at the University of Minnesota. Two children, Pam and Susan, were born in Duluth. The family moved to West Lafayette, Indiana when Mason accepted a position as Professor at Purdue University. Larry, Janet and James were born in West Lafayette.
Jean was a homemaker, and involved in Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. She sang in the church choir, and loved classical music, and attending convocations at Purdue. Other interests were bird watching, genealogy, and herb gardening. She loved working with a female architect to design the family home built in West Lafayette. While still raising her five children, Jean attended graduate school at Purdue, receiving a Master's Degree in Sociology. After Mason's death, Jean made a trip to England, where she connected with English relatives. One of her last long distance trips was to New York City to visit Pam.
Jean was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Lafayette. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and siblings, Patricia Buntenbach, and Leonard Phillips, and a niece, Brooke Phillips. Surviving are her five children, Pamela Hicks of Piermont, New York, Susan Hicks of Lafayette, Larry Hicks, Janet Hicks Glossic, and James Hicks (wife, Linda), all of West Lafayette. There are four grandchildren, Dustin Glossic, Leslie Glossic, and Alexandra Hicks, all of West Lafayette, and Arinna Hicks, of Lafayette. Also, niece, Mary Pat Hastings (husband, Steve), and nephews, Phillip, Andrew and Brian Buntenbach. Funeral arrangements are pending.
