WEST LAFAYETTE ? Janine (Goujon) Kelly, 75, of Chalon-Sur-Saone, Burgundy, France died at 6:00 a.m. Friday, Dec. 25, 2009, at St. Mary?s Health Center, Lafayette, IN. She had battled Alzheimer?s for the past 10 years.
Janine was born June 10, 1934 in Chalon-sur-Saone, France, the daughter of a professional photographer.
Janine met and married Thomas Kelly in 1964 in France before accompanying Tom back to the U.S. to begin his academic career at Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH. In 1967 Janine, Tom and their daughters Claire and Anne moved to West Lafayette, IN. Janine and Tom?s third daughter, Claudine, was born in Lafayette in 1970. After retirement in 1995, Janine and Tom moved back to France, living 10 years in Poissy, a suburb of Paris, before returning to University Place, West Lafayette in 2004. Janine spent the last three years of her life at St. Mary?s Health Center.
Janine was a Registered Nurse, earning a BS and MS in Nursing from Purdue University in 1980. She later also received a MS in Counseling from Purdue University. Her career involved caring for patients at various Lafayette area hospitals, including St. Elizabeth?s, Home Hospital, and Americana Nursing Home, which is now St. Mary?s Health Center. She retired from Wabash Valley Hospital in 1994.
In addition to her professional life, Janine enjoyed many and varied leisure pursuits. She was a talented gourmet cook, a pastry chef, an accomplished watercolorist, a gardener, and a seamstress. In every pursuit, Janine was able to incorporate the best aspects of the two cultures that were so integral in her life ? France and the United States.
Surviving are her husband and three daughters, Claire Ebert (husband: Daniel) of Washington, DC, Anne Aikman (husband: David) of Geneva, Switzerland, and Claudine Meredith-Goujon (husband: Aeric). Janine is also survived by five grandchildren, Anastasia, Juliette, Astor, Zachary, and Owen. Janine was the second of three children; her younger brother preceded her in death.
A memorial mass is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2009 at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in West Lafayette. A private internment will take place at Grandview Cemetery.
