James R. Carson, 98, of Battle Ground, went to be with the Lord at 8:02 PM Wednesday, May 2, 2012 at St. Elizabeth East.
He was born February 21, 1914, in Omaha, NE, to the late Eric N. and Emma E. Schroeder Carson.
He graduated from Benson High School in Omaha, NE, received his BS from Oregon State College and his MS and PhD from Cornell University. He was a member of Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity.
From February 23, 1942 to February 25, 1946 James served in Europe with the First Army Infantry 104th Timberwolf Division under General Terry Allen. As a division artillery Captain, he earned a Bronze Star for meritorious service.
On June 21, 1947 he married Jean Moore in the Presbyterian Church at Ithaca, NY.
Dr. Carson started his career at the University of Connecticut as Associate Professor of Poultry. In 1959 he went on to Purdue University and was the USDA Coordinator of the North Central Regional Poultry Breeding Program. In 1962 until his retirement he was professor of Poultry Husbandry and became the head of the Poultry Section in the School of Animal Sciences. Dr. Carson retired as Professor Emeritus in 1984. He was honored as an Outstanding Counselor in the School of Agriculture, a Fellow in the Poultry Science Association and received the Golden Egg Award for service to Indiana State Poultry. He authored numerous poultry research papers, book chapters, and magazine articles.
James became a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church in 1960, serving as Sunday school teacher, Deacon, Elder, Trustee and usher until he was 90. He was also a member of Noon Kiwanis, Purdue?s Bowling League and was on the Troop Committee and Scout Master of Troop 35. He enjoyed his family, gardening, bird watching and everyone he met.
Surviving along with his wife are three sons Richard A. Carson (wife Doyne) of Battle Ground, J. Randall Carson (wife Jacquie) of Homer Glen, IL, John E. Carson (wife Kristen) of Brownsburg and a daughter Roberta L. Keeler (husband Brian) of Cazenovia, NY. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by 2 brothers Wallace and Jess Carson and a sister Jane Jackson all of Portland, OR.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm Monday, May 7, 2012 at Covenant Church with Pastor Rob Eyman officiating. A Private family burial will be at Tippecanoe Memory Gardens.
