James P. Hackerd

James P. Hackerd, 87, of Lafayette, died at 4 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2010, at St. Elizabeth Central.
Born Jan. 24, 1923, in Clinton County, he was the son of the late James and Gartha Mattox Hackerd.
He graduated from Rossville High School in 1941 and served in the Army from April 5, 1943 to March 19, 1946.
On March 6, 1943, he married Elizabeth J. “Betty” Wallace in Dayton, and she survives.
Mr. Hackerd was a self-employed salesman and repair man of office machines for 30 years before retiring in 1985.
He was a member of Rossville American Legion Post 342 and a former member of the Horseshoe Club. He enjoyed woodworking and gardening.
Surviving with his wife are a son, Mark Hackerd (wife: Celeste), and a daughter, Karen Mosson, both of Lafayette; and two sisters, Evelyn Troxel of Mulberry and Kathryn Zimmer of Brook.
Also surviving are 3 grandchildren, Terra Kline (husband: Kyle), Alexis and Dillon Hackerd; and 4 great-grandchildren, Alyse, Keegan, Lester and Audrina.
James was also preceded in death by a son, James Hackerd; 2 sisters, Barbara Newhart and Wilma Catron; and 2 brothers, John and Robert Hackerd.
Visitation 5-8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 5, 2010, at Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel, 400 Twyckenham Blvd., Lafayette, IN 47909. Service 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 6, 2010, at Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel, the Rev. John H. Everett officiating. Interment will follow at Rossville Cemetery. Those wishing may contribute to the Charity of Choice.

I was saddened to hear of the passing of uncle Jimmy. As a child, he fulfilled and influenced a missing part of my life. I will always admire and remember him for his devotion to his family. Please except mine and Carol?s sympathy for the loss of your husband and father.
