James Otis Stingley, 58, of Lafayette died unexpectedly December 20, 2013 due to complications from respiratory illness. He was born May 31, 1955 to Virginia Katherine (Kathy) Stingley of Lafayette and the late Bobby C. Stingley. Jim graduated in 1973 from Jefferson High School. He was on the swim team and won many trophies as a youth. He joined the U.S. Army in 1974 and spent time in Japan and Korea. He then joined the U.S. Navy to make it his career and served six years though he was Honorably discharged due to his illness. He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church. Jim will always be remembered by the smile on his face and his kindness to others. He is survived by a brother Bruce Stingley; sisters Robin (Tom) Moore, Brenda Stingley (partner Stan Koning), Beth (Charlie) Klippel and Theresa Fairfield, all from Lafayette; a half-sister Pamela Haddix of Urbaba, Ohio. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and many great nieces and nephews. Friends will be received from 1:00 pm until the time of the Memorial Service at 2:00 pm Saturday, January 11, 2014 at Christ United Methodist Church at 3610 S. 18th St. Lafayette, IN with Pastor Scott Mann officiating. In lieu of flowers those wishing may contribute in Jim's name to Mental Health America of Tippecanoe County, 914 South St. Lafayette, N 47901 or National Alliance of Mentally Ill West Central IN., 1508 Tippecanoe St. Room 4-90 Lafayette, IN 47904.
