Dr. James L. Auckley passed away on Thursday, September 17, at his West Lafayette home with family by his side. James was born in Cleveland, Ohio on July 21, 1935 to Herbert and Olive Auckley. He graduated from St. Ignatius High School in 1953 and subsequently attended John Carroll University in University Heights, Ohio. He then attended St. Louis University Medical School for 4 years followed by a medical internship at City Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri and a 4 year residency at the Cleveland Clinic. James married Susan Kalinowski, a nurse, in 1962 at St. Margaret Mary's Catholic Church in Cleveland, Ohio. The couple moved to Fort Worth, Texas where James served two years as an Air Force physician during the Vietnam War. The couple eventually settled in West Lafayette, Indiana where they raised their four children. James practiced Internal Medicine, specializing in Allergy, for 43 years at the Arnett Clinic. In his retirement years, he continued to practice medicine at the Veteran's Home and Riggs Community Health Clinic. James was known by his colleagues for his meticulous and devoted care of his patients. A physician with a gardener's heart, James labored endlessly in his flower and vegetable gardens. He taught this love of beauty and new-growth to his grandchildren; teaching them how to plant and care for their many gardens. James loved sports and games, challenging his grandchildren to competitions of all types. Above all, James had an enduring belief in the inherent value of persistence in all tasks. He is survived by his wife, Susan (Kalinowski) Auckley, and four children, Daniel Auckley and spouse Sherrie Auckley of Lafayette, Indiana; Dennis Auckley and spouse Deirdre Wenzel of Bay Village, Ohio; Timothy Auckley of West Lafayette, Indiana; and Patricia (Auckley) Luban and spouse Michael Luban of Lafayette. James has three surviving sisters, Charlene Raby and Dorothy Auckley of Cleveland, Ohio, and Adelaide Lindquist of Newport, Massachusetts. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren; Amy, Melissa, Danielle, Grace, Elizabeth, Joseph, Olivia, Sarah, and Nicholas. James was preceded in death by his parents Herbert and Olive Auckley. Visitation is at Soller-Baker funeral home in West Lafayette, Indiana, on Sunday, September 20, from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm. Funeral services will be held Monday, September 21, at 11:30 am at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with a luncheon to follow. A private family interment at Tippecanoe Memorial Gardens Cemetery will then take place. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Church of Blessed Sacrament or the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America (www.ccfa.org).
