Irene E. Kohls, age 94, of West Lafayette, died August 24. She was born August 19, 1922 on a farm near Boswell, IN, the only child of George L. and Mary Elizabeth Kirtley Shuster. She spent her young life in Fowler, IN and graduated from Fowler High School in 1940. Her marriage was to Lt. Richard L. Kohls on April 20, 1944, at the home of her parents in Fowler. Officiating was Rev. Doyle Mullen, the first pastor of Federated Church. In 1944-1945, they lived in Kentucky and Maryland where Dick was stationed with the U.S. Army. When he left for overseas duty, Irene returned to Purdue and graduated in 1946. Irene and Dick lived in Columbia, MO from 1946 to 1948, home of the University of Missouri were Dick received his M.A. degree in 1947. They returned to Purdue in 1948, where Dick received his Ph.D. Their activities centered around their nearby families, children, grandchildren, church and Purdue University. Irene enjoyed her home and family, camping trips, picnics with friends, music, needlework, sewing, traveling to Europe and Purdue activities, especially basketball. Irene was a member of Federated Church, Benton County Historical Association, Purdue Women’s Club, John Purdue Club, Purdue President’s Council, Life member of the Purdue Alumni Association, Phi Mu Fraternity and Tippecanoe County Historical Association. She is survived by two children, Michael E. Kohls (wife Diane) of Ephrata, PA and Kathryn Ann Haas (husband Mark) of Veedersburg, IN. also surviving are seven grandchildren, Megan Kohls Moore (husband Matthew), Jennifer Kohls, Marisa Kohls, Carlos Kohls, Jeffrey Haas, Jacob Haas (wife Stephanie), Austin Haas, and two great-grandchildren, Samuel and Emma Moore. She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years and daughter-in law, Kathy. The family would like to thank the compassionate staff at Westminster Village and St. Elizabeth Hospice. A private family burial is planned.
