Helen Marie Cox (93) passed away peacefully Tuesday July 31st at Rosewalk Village with family and friends having just celebrated her 93rd birthday the previous day. Helen was born in Bloomington, Indiana on July 30, 1925. In 1943, she graduated from Crawfordsville High School and married Marion Leon Cox on November 6, 1943 at a Navy Chaplain’s home in Kokomo, IN. Helen and Leon would go on to celebrate 72 years of marriage together. Throughout her life, Helen worked as a secretary for several organizations including Keim and Harris Insurance Agency, National Homes, and at Earhart Hall at Purdue University.
Helen will be remembered not only for her caring nature and loving disposition, but also for the charming home she built and shared with her family. She could often be found pruning her flowers, picking homegrown vegetables, or placing a saucer of food outside for a garden cat. Inside she baked, cooked and served meals for her family who gathered often, almost daily, to enjoy her food and shared time together. Helen will always be known for her compassion for others and love of nurturing flowers and animals alike.
Helen also volunteered a great deal of time in her daughter’s elementary school classrooms for 40 years assisting students who will always remember her for her kindness and famous milkshakes. Helen was a proud member of Congress Street United Methodist Church for over 69 years.
Helen is survived by her daughter Pamela Cray (husband Edward) of West Lafayette; son Randall Cox (companion Diane Coghill) of Delphi; granddaughter Alicia Crawford of Fishers; and grandson Kyle Cray (wife Cara) of West Lafayette. Helen was proceeded in death by her husband Marion Leon Cox and sister Gladys Holt.
The family would like to thank the staff and residents of Rosewalk Village, especially her dear friends Dee, Karyl, and Sandy, and St. Elizabeth Hospice for their love, support, and friendship over the past few years.
