Hazel E. Hurst, 90, of Lafayette, died at 8:32 a.m. Sunday, June 26, 2011, at Indiana University Health Arnett Hospital.
She was born June 16, 1921, in Middlesboro, Ky., to the late Charles and Nevada Fultz Sandefur. She graduated from Stockwell High School in 1939.
On April 4, 1943, she married Hillard R. Hurst in Stockwell, and he died April 6, 1999.
Mrs. Hurst was a homemaker and prior to her marriage she had worked at the Indiana Pythian Home.
She was a member of Colfax Christian Church where she was active in the Ladies Auxiliary. She also participated in the Ladies Auxiliary of Local Carpenters Union. She enjoyed traveling with family and her friendships and outings at Rosewalk Commons.
Surviving are two daughters, Ruth A. Gable (husband: Ed) of Colfax and Linda K. Mathews (husband: Mark) of Frankfort; three brothers, Ed Sandefur (wife: JoAnn) of Columbia, Tenn., Frank Sandefur (wife: Daphne) of Sierra Vista, Ariz., and John Sandefur (wife: Sharon) of Lafayette; and two sisters, Christine Accardi (husband: Augie) of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Cynthia Skees of Lafayette.
Also surviving are 7 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by a son, Robert A Hurst; a great-grandson; 4 brothers; and 1 sister.
Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel, 400 Twyckenham Blvd. Funeral service at 10 a.m. Thursday at Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel, Pastor Dave Collier officiating. Burial will be at Elmwood Cemetery. Those wishing may contribute to Colfax Christian Church.
