It was a sad day when I heard of he passing of my classmate and friend, Fred. I had known him for almost 50 years, first as a dental student at IUSD, and then together in the graduate orthodontic program. I will remember him for his warmth, his smile, his professionalism, and his friendship and companionship during the trials and tribulations of our professional education. Fred will be sorely missed by his community, and all the patients he took under his wings. My deepest condolences to his wife, Ann, and to his family.

Dear Ann, The passing of Fred is a great loss not only for your family, but for the entire dental profession. Fred's dedication to IUSD, orthodontics, his patients, and HOF is legend. I have attached one of my favorite photos of Fred at a HOF meeting many years ago. He is surrounded by many of his HOF colleagues as we entertained Jim Baldwin and Charlie Burstone. Cheri and I had hoped to join Chuck and Karen Pritchett for Fred's memorial reception tomorrow afternoon. Unfortunately, John Pritchett is out of town and I will be covering a full day of patients in Greenfield. That is only a day per week practice, so it is very difficult to reschedule patients, particularly right before school starts. I am sure Fred would understand the problem, and hope you do also. Cheri and I would like to send you a special memorial for Fred. Your home address in the HOF roster is old and I am not sure it is current. Please send your current address via: werobert@iu.edu. Warm condolences, Cheri and Gene Roberts

Ann, This is Mike Dulin. I'm an anesthesiologist in Vincennes, Indiana. You don't remember me but I met you both in the fall of 1972 in Muncie where Fred and I shared a class at BSU. Fred invited me to your apartment for dinner one evening and it was a wonderful evening. Fred was trying to get into dental school and I in medical school. Obviously, we both succeeded. I always wondered what became of him, and after reading the obituary, I realized that he had indeed achieved great things in both his professional career and life itself. My condolences to you and your family. Fred left a lasting impression in me all of these years.

On behalf of 12 of Fred’s fraternity brother classmates that in recent months greatly enjoyed Fred’s company every week in a Friday Zoom discussion group, our sincerest condolences are extended to Ann and to all of his immediate and extended family members. It was a great blessing for each of us to have had Fred with us these last few months. All of us liked Fred when we were living together in the SAE fraternity house at Beloit College, and now 54 years later with our reconnection, everyone liked Fred even more.

Dr. Sputh was one of the most genuine, kind, and intelligent people I have ever met. His loss to our community is substantial. I was honored to be his IT person for the last 20 years. Prayers to Ann and the rest of the family.

Dear Ann and Family, Although my time with Fred was infrequent and usually fairly brief, he ALWAYS was friendly and engaging. He made you feel valued and respected. If we had more Freds in this world, it would be more kind, loving and accepting. Our Lord Jesus is rejoicing now, while sending us comfort. I am very sorry for your loss of a lifetime love.
