Frances A. O'Connor, 101, of Lafayette died Thursday, August 28, 2014. She was preceded in death by her husband Lawrence A. O'Connor Sr., her daughter Mary Kathryn O'Connor Shay and her granddaughter Leigh O'Connor DePaepe. She was born August 18, 1913, in Elmhurst, IL, to the late Frank and Caroline Vertovec, Slovenian immigrants. Fran was predeceased by her brothers Frank and Carl Vertovec and is survived by brothers Edward Vertovec, Raymond Vertovec both Elmhurst, IL and a sister Jean Schmitt of Corvallis, OR. Fran graduated from Trinity High School, River Forest, IL, worked in Chicago as a business manager for an insurance company and attended classes at DePaul and Purdue Universities. She was married on June 10, 1939 in the Log Chapel at the University Of Notre Dame. Her activities included serving on the Lafayette Library Board, working with the St. Elizabeth Hospital Auxiliary and driving for Meals on Wheels. Fran was a Cub Scout Leader and a St. Mary Mothers' Club volunteer and member of St. Mary Cathedral. She enjoyed golf, bridge, travel and reading. Surviving are her children Lawrence A. O'Connor Jr. (Ann) of Indianapolis, Margaret “Peggy” O'Connor of Walnut Creek, CA, son-in-law Vincent Shay of Lake Forest, IL, grandchildren Courtney, Caroline, Kathryn, great grandchildren Brooke, Connor, Mary Kathryn and Aidan. Visitation will be 1/2 hour prior to a 1:30 PM Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday at St. Mary Cathedral, Fr. Jeff Martin officiating. Interment will be at St. Mary Cemetery. Those wishing may contribute in Fran's memory to St. Mary Cathedral, Westminster Foundation, St. Elizabeth Hospice.
