Erika Gautschi, 87, of Lafayette, Indiana, passed away on Friday, March 24, 2023. She was born on October 31, 1935, in Basel, Switzerland. After graduating from the Frauengymnasium with a teaching diploma in 1954, Erika taught for one year at a primary school. She married Werner Gautschi in 1956 and they emigrated to the United States, where Werner assumed academic positions at various universities. After Werner’s premature death in 1959, while Erika was expecting their first child, she returned to her hometown of Basel. While there, she married Walter Gautschi, twin brother to Werner. In 1960, Erika and Werner’s son, Thomas, was born. Walter and Erika moved back to the United States with Thomas in 1961, where Walter eventually, in 1963, assumed a professorship at Purdue University as an inaugural member of the Computer Science Department. Erika and Walter have lived in Lafayette ever since, interrupted only by sabbatical years in Munich, Germany and Madison, Wisconsin. Erika and Walter had three daughters, Theresa (Ainsworth) in 1961, Doris (Fulwider) in 1965, and Cari (Carpenter) in 1969. Erika is preceded in death by her oldest daughter, Theresa.
Erika assumed an academic appointment as a lecturer in the Department of Foreign Languages at Purdue University teaching German and was also active as a tutor and German-to-English translator of several books. Erika’s passion for foreign languages extended to music, having been an accomplished pianist. She also was passionate about gardening, which she loved to share with others. Erika and Walter enjoyed traveling back to Switzerland, where they maintained an apartment and spent several months at a time in their beloved home country. While in Switzerland, they enjoyed hiking in the mountains and remaining in close contact with school friends. Erika will be greatly missed by her husband, her three remaining children, ten grandchildren, and countless friends, all of whom she deeply cherished and inspired.
Memorial service will be 2:00 pm on Wednesday, April 5, 2023, at Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel, 400 Twyckenham Blvd. The family will receive friends following the service.
