Dwayne P. Daehler, 75, of West Lafayette, died on January 25, 2019. Dwayne and his twin sister were born on July 8, 1943 in Freeport, Illinois to Leona and Paul Daehler. He grew up on a dairy farm in northwest Illinois, roaming the hills, an outdoorsman from the beginning. He graduated from Mt. Carroll High School, Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, MN and Luther-Northwestern Seminary in St. Paul, MN.
Dwayne married Marcia K. Nelson on June 24, 1967. He served as minister of St. Mark’s Lutheran, Newport, KY; Bethlehem Lutheran, Gary, IN; Our Saviour Lutheran, West Lafayette; St. Paul’s Lutheran, Haysville, IN and New Hope Lutheran, Monticello, IN, as well as other interim and supply ministries. He was Co-Director at ARC Retreat Center, Cambridge, MN and also worked as a spiritual director.
Dwayne was very active outdoors, X-C skiing the 50 Km Am Birkebeiner for over 20 years, running, white water canoeing, camping, and backpacking. He travelled to Russia, Africa, the Middle East, Europe, Scotland, Australia, Costa Rica and mission trips in Guatemala.
In retirement years, Dwayne became a more accomplished photographer and member at Artists Own, Lafayette, IN and taught WALLA classes on photography and travel. He served on local arts organization boards.
Dwayne was a man of myriad talents with a gift for creating new insights and sharing them with others through his ministry, his photography, his woodworking projects, his sense of humor and his vast collection of stories.
Dwayne is survived by his wife, Marcia; sister Melva (David) Radtke; brother-in-law Doug (Sherry) Nelson; sisters-in-law Candace (Hilo) Del Bosque; Linda (Ken) Cezar. Other survivors include nephews, Damien, Tristan, Mark, Ryan, Marty, David, Jeremy; nieces, Devon, Sara, Teresa. Also surviving are several great-nieces and nephews and many special friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and twin sister, Darlene Bernardin.
Visitation will be on Friday, Feb. 1 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Soller-Baker West Lafayette Chapel, 1184 Sagamore Parkway in West Lafayette. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Feb. 2 at 10:30 a.m. at Our Saviour Lutheran Church, 300 West Fowler in West Lafayette. Burial will take place at Grandview Cemetery in West Lafayette at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Our Saviour Lutheran Church, Lafayette Urban Ministry, or Luther Seminary, 2481 Como Avenue, St. Paul, MN 55108.
