Donna May Segrist, 82, West Lafayette, IN died peaceably at home at 12:10pm on Monday, April 8, 2013, of complications related to her lengthy battle with Parkinson's disease. Donna was born December 26, 1930 in Wauseon, Ohio, to Donald K. and Esther Mettler Grisier. She married Allen Segrist on July 24, 1955 and he survives. Also surviving are three sons, Don (Sharon) Segrist of Onstead, MI; Andy Segrist of Portland, OR; and Kurt (Elizabeth) Segrist of Bend, OR; two grandsons, Jim and Sam and two granddaughters, Erin and Caitlin; one sister Nanette (John) Eckert of Brookings, OR, and a large group of loving and devoted in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews. One daughter, Anne Louise Segrist, and one son, James William Segrist preceded her in death. Donna was raised in Wauseon, OH, and in 1948 was graduated from Wauseon High School. She went on to study at Ohio Wesleyan University. While there she became a member of Delta Gamma Sorority and was active in student government. She earned her B.A. in Elementary Education in 1952. At Purdue University she completed her M.S. in Education in 1981. Donna taught school in Dayton, Delta, and Columbus, OH, before moving to Indiana. Her teaching career continued in the West Lafayette School System where she taught kindergarten for over a decade. She organized the original Greater Lafayette vision screening program and the toll-road for blindness in Lafayette. Donna had a life-long passion for learning. She was on the board of directors of the Indiana Society for Prevention of Blindness. On campus, she served as an advisor to the Purdue Delta Gamma chapter. At Saint Andrew United Methodist Church she taught Adult Study classes and was a member of the Creative Worship Committee. She was involved in the arts programs of the community, performing four times in plays of The Lafayette Civic Theater. She also served as a docent at the Art Museum of Great Lafayette and volunteered in the ArtSmart education program with Tippecanoe County elementary school students. Donna was the Co-founder of The Compassionate Friends of Greater Lafayette, serving families of people who have lost a child. Her work with Compassionate Friends was far reaching and highly significant to her life and of great benefit to many families of the regional area. She loved music, going to the movies, entertaining, and traveling. She entertained and taught young members of the family in their annual Shindig gatherings. A memorial service for Donna will be held at 4:00pm, Saturday, April 20, 2013 at Saint Andrew United Methodist Church. From 2:00 to 4:00 friends may come to the Commons of St. Andrew to visit with the family. In in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the following: Compassionate Friends-Greater Lafayette Chapter; Delta Gamma Foundation; St. Andrew United Methodist Church; or West Lafayette Schools Education Foundation.
