Donna Jean Cox, 76
Donna Jean Sawmiller Cox, 76, of Lafayette, died Sunday, Feb. 21, 2010, at Blake Medical Center, Bradenton, Fla.
Born Sept. 29, 1933, in Summit, Ill., to the late Samuel and Della Draves Crooks, she graduated from Kelly High School in Chicago in 1951.
She married Darrell E. Sawmiller on May 9, 1968, in Glennwood, Ill., and he died Dec. 7, 1995. She then married Lester Paul Cox, Oct. 28, 2006, in Lafayette, and he survives.
She was a homemaker and owned Mr. Steak Restaurant from 1971 to 1979 with Mr. Sawmiller. She also worked at JCPenney, Kohl?s and the Motherhood Store.
Mrs. Cox was an active member of the Battle Ground Bible Church and also was a member of the Merri Misses Home Extension Club.
Surviving with her husband are her children, Kim Hood (husband: Bill) of Punta Gorda, Fla., Brock Campbell (wife: Julie) of Murfreesboro, Tenn., Gray Campbell (wife: Kelly) of Mason, Ohio, and Karen Cushman (husband: Ken) of Crawfordsville; her stepchildren, Sandy Fights (husband: Mike) of Lafayette, Paula Wilson (husband: David) of Martinsville and Carol Koehn (husband: Paul) of Ankeny, Iowa; and one brother, Melvin Crooks (wife: Marilyn) of Rockford, Ill.
Also surviving are 9 grandchildren and 9 stepgrandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Marilyn Deval; a sister-in-law, Carolyn Crooks; and a brother-in-law, Arthur Deval.
Visitation 5-8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 26, 2010, at Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel, 400 Twyckenham Blvd. Services 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010, at Battle Ground Bible Church, with Pastors David Wilson, Chester Martin and Kenny Loehe officiating. Interment at Tippecanoe Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations to: Moody Bible Institute, 820 N. Although we are not with you in person, we are with you in thoughts and prayers. Donna was more than a stepmom and stepgrandma and we will miss her very much. She was the best thing that ever happened to Darrell and she welcomed me and mine into your wonderful family with open arms. Each time we shared a special occasion with all of you, Emily would say she wished that she had such a big, close family. Donna was the heart of that family and I know you will miss her a lot, but there are many memories to keep her alive in your hearts. My wish is to remember her just as she was when she entered Karen&s house the morning of her wedding to Paul singing "Here comes the bride." She was so nervous and happy and acting like a young woman with her first wedding. It was a fun time to see her in love and happy again.
Donna was the lifeline for me to keep in touch with all of you and get updates of all your family news. The last time she called, I wasn&t home and although she talked to Paul, he got everyone mixed up and couldn&t remember what she had said. I will live with regret that I never called her back that time and got the updates from her. Please know that you are all in our hearts and that we hope to continue our family connections even with part of our hearts and family now in heaven.

Our prayers and sympathy go out to Paul and the family of Donna Cox. She was a very sweet lady. She will be missed at Palm Village. We were so shocked to hear of her passing on the day we arrived at Palm Village from Remington, IN. May her family feel the presence of Jesus in your sorrow.

I am so sorry to see that Donna has passed away. I knew Donna when she was at JC Penney&s. I worked at Penney&s for 25 years but, I left in 1998. I am not sure if she was there when I worked there or I met her shopping. She was always a very pleasant person and will be missed.
My prayers are with her family.
