Donald (Donn) Stanfield, 65, of Lafayette, died Saturday, October 12 at his home after a short battle with pancreatic cancer.
Born on June 18, 1959, to Donald Stanfield (Sr.) and Mary Stanfield in Indianapolis, Donn traveled much of the United States in his youth before returning to Indiana and graduating from West Lafayette High School. He met his one and only love, Judith (Judi) Hines in the summer of 1977 and married on May 14, 1978. The pair raised two boys, Jason and Jonathon, in Lafayette where he lived and worked until death.
Donn worked in the auto parts industry his entire adult life, beginning with Unit Parts (later acquired by Big A) and culminating with a 30-year career in outside sales with Lafayette Auto Supply. Donn cared deeply about his colleagues and customers, many of whom became his dearest friends. He was a dedicated follower of Jesus with more than three decades as a servant leader at Linnwood Church of Christ in many roles, but none more important to him than as a high school youth group leader.
Known for his devotion to the Chicago Cubs and Bears, Donn loved sports of all kinds, but especially baseball, football, and auto racing. He combined his passion for football and youth by coaching for the Lafayette 56ers, most years with son Jonathon and close friend John Robinson. Donn and Judi rescued and loved several large-breed dogs in their 46-year marriage, and despite the dogs’ best efforts, took pride in maintaining a beautiful lawn and landscaping.
Donn is survived by wife Judi Stanfield, sons Jason (Christina) and Jonathon (Laura) Stanfield, grandson Zachary Stanfield, and granddaughters Adrienne, Grace, Abigail, and Amelia Stanfield, all of Lafayette. Also surviving are sisters Rebecca Britt of Massachusetts, Kim (Jerry) Brunson of Lafayette, brother-in-law Alan (Jill) Hines of Lafayette, Kelly Foster of Indianapolis, and Dawn, Deanne, and Tracy Stanfield, all of Florida. Preceding him in death are parents Donald Stanfield (Sr.) and Mary Stanfield, stepmother Donna Stanfield, mother-in-law Anita Hines, father-in-law Alton Hines, and brother Grant (Squire) Stanfield.
Visitation will be from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Friday, October 18 at Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel, 400 Twyckenham Blvd in Lafayette. The funeral service will be at 10:00 am on Saturday, October 19, also at Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel with Pastor Stacey Littlefield officiating. Burial will follow at Meadow View Cemetary in Lafayette.
Memorial contributions may be made in Donn’s name to the youth football program Lafayette 56ers, PO Box 5312, Lafayette, Indiana 47905.
