Dakota “Cody” Carmicle, 26, of Colburn, IN, passed away on October 28^th at 12:50 am. Cody fought a courageous battle against a rare form of cancer, Ewing’s Sarcoma, for just over a year. We were so grateful that he was able to spend his last days at home, surrounded by family and friends.

Cody was born on August 22, 1995, to Nick and Kris Carmicle. They are surviving along with Cody’s younger brother, Brice. Cody lived a life larger than he was. At birth he was diagnosed with Optic Nerve Hypoplasia, leaving him legally blind. It was hard to refer to it as an impairment because nothing could slow this man down. He loved and was very skilled at basketball, and most recently, disc golf, at which he improved exponentially in the last year. Goalball, a game developed for the visually impaired, was Cody’s passion. He was in the running to go to this year’s Tokyo Olympics to play for the USA Men’s Goalball for the Paralympic Games when he learned of the Ewing’s Sarcoma Diagnosis. He played all sports until it just became to difficult.

Cody was an avid lover of music and watching and playing many sports. He dedicated much of his time to training and practicing, becoming the best goalball athlete that he could be. He had a passion for fashion and his, unique and numerous, shoe collection was an example of that passion. He was caring, kind, witty, strong, and resilient with every aspect of his life. He was always polite and respectful towards others. Cody had a smile, the best smile, that would light up a room. We were so proud that our son positively impacted so many lives, apparent in the love that was shown to him during his battle.

It is difficult to find words to express how thankful our family is for the expression of love shown to us during this truly difficult time. We wish to extend our sincere thanks to family, friends, doctor’s and nurses at University Hospital, Franciscan hospice staff, IU health lifeline transport (Ben), and Matt and Nicole O’Brien. All the above people made it possible to bring our son home to spend his final days in his favorite place, home with his family.

We will be celebrating the life of Cody Carmicle November 7, 2021, from 12-4 pm at the Buck Creek Community Center 5714 N 750 E Lafayette, IN 47905. And also Fort Wayne at a later date for his friends and family at Turnstone. We will be gathering, to share stories, memories, and laughs, to celebrate this wonderful person, who is greatly missed. Guests are encouraged to bring personal photos or stories to share with his loved ones.
