Clyde P. Smith, 88
Clyde Preston Smith, 88, of West Lafayette, died Friday, July 23, 2010.
Born Feb. 28, 1922, he was the son of the late Clyde W. and Hassie Jones Smith. Earlier in life he worked as an apprentice journeyman machinist at the shipyards in Newport News, Va., then served in the Navy as a radio technician in the South Pacific during World War II.
Mr. Smith came to Purdue University in 1948 as a student, and later taught there in the departments of mechanical and industrial engineering. At the time of his retirement in 1987, he was a full professor and Director of Pre-engineering Guidance and Counseling. Upon retirement, Clyde was granted Professor Emeritus status.
He was an active member of the Federated Church of West Lafayette, where he sang in the choir for over 50 years. He was a member of Lafayette Kiwanis Club, served on the housing corporation board for Pi Kappa Phi fraternity, and was a Faculty Fellow for Wiley Hall at Purdue. He enjoyed music and woodworking.
Surviving are his wife, Lou Jean Smith of West Lafayette; his children, Clyde F. Smith (wife: Kathy) of Knoxville, Tenn., Holly Randall and Daniel Smith (companion: Antonio), both of Santa Fe, N.M., Linda St. Clair of Seattle and David P. Smith (wife: Fran) of St. Louis; and three brothers, Frank Smith and Ralph Smith, both of Piney Flats, Tenn., and Jack Smith of Orlando, Fla.
Also surviving are grandchildren, Aaron P. Smith (wife: Micah) of Baton Rouge, La., Charles C. Smith of Houston, Texas, Cheyenne Randall of Seattle, Lysa Smith Tuten (husband: Wes) of Charleston, S.C., Cole Smith, Nathaniel Smith and Caleb Smith, all of St. Louis, and Shawn Blackowl of Santa Fe; and 3 great-grandchildren, Jacob and Dominic Smith of Jacksonville, Fla., and Zoe Tuten of Charleston. He was preceded in death by a sister, Florence Schmidt; and a daughter, Nancy Lynn Smith.
Memorial service 2 p.m. Monday, July 26, 2010, with visitation and reception to follow, at Federated Church of West Lafayette, the Revs. Susan Lisack and Gary Reif officiating. Dearest loved ones: Oh my gosh, I am so scattered brained (and embarrased) by my terrible faux pas in my first message. Both of us have lost our dads and remember distinctly how we felt just knowing that there were prayers on our behalf from our friends.
