Charlotte S. Scarcelli, 78, died of natural causes on October 6, 2021, in her home in West Lafayette. The daughter of the late Col (USA ret.) Hubert E. and Elizabeth H. I worked with Charlotte for many years at Purdue in her role as departmental Schedule Deputy. We also took the opportunity to talk about our lives and families outside of Purdue. Of special meaning to her were the family dinners she relished to put on. A kind lady, who tried to help everyone ... not always easy in the work role she had.

I have fond memories of the many days I spent at the Scarcelli home as a child, and how Charlotte always made me feel welcome. My thoughts and condolences to her family.

It seems I have always known Charlotte, but we grew closer in recent years. I enjoyed our long talks and the exchanging of ideas. I admired her for her quest for knowledge about any number of things and for being a voracious reader. Charlotte was very selfless with her time and shared her gifts with many. She had a genuine concern for others. I will miss her presence here. I extend my deepest sympathy to her family.

I remember what a beautiful lector Charlotte was during the 5:30 Mass. She made the readings come alive for us. I will miss her very much.
Peace of mind is a call away. We’re here when you need us most.

I remember Charlotte very well. Our conversations in the Stanley Coulter halls were about our children, our faith, and about how we were handling Purdue issues, both of the happy and the not so happy kind. Until I received this sad message I didn't realize how long it has been since we talked together. I knew she was battling cancer, or that is my memory, but she always seemed to be overcoming this dread spector. I wish she were still with us. But her memory is for a blessing, and that is a good bequest in our troubled day. stuart robertson

Teresa Cecil left a message on October 31, 2021:
Charlotte was a good friend of mine with each of us becoming closer to each other in the past 10 years. We were both in IN Voices of Women together from 2010-2011, and we were in a book group together. She knew her Catholic faith well, and she challenged me. I would like to believe that I challenged her, too. She was one of the first people I met when I began going to St. Tom’s. She got me started in loom knitting and encouraged me to make little red caps for the NICU babies like she did. She always wanted to me teach her how to make a shrimp dish which I, unfortunately, did not do. She lived fairly close to me, and we would enjoy long visits with each other. Charlotte spoke her truth directly which is a trait I have always admired. She encouraged me to ask my current spiritual director for spiritual direction which has been a blessing. Even when I go to 5:30 Mass, I can still picture where she sat and how she turned to the people around her after mass to find out what was going on in their lives. I loved her as a true friend. She will be greatly missed.

I was so sorry to learn of Charlotte's passing, and so warmed by this obituary and the beautiful photograph of her. My office was across from hers in Stanley Coulter the last years I worked there, and we shared many interests. We laughed and cried over syntax errors and typos in printed material. We compared notes on caring for our parents and kids. And yes, like Charles, we agonized over University politics . She had many friends in the Department. She will be missed. My condolences to her family.
Charles Ganelin left a message on October 29, 2021:
I just learned today of Charlotte's death. I was fortunate to spend a considerable amount of time with Charlotte during her years as schedule deputy in Foreign Languages at Purdue. I was Chair of the Spanish and Portuguese section so naturally she and I worked together. We forged a friendship over that time that continued beyond my chairing and even after I left Purdue. Our conversations covered much ground--including departmental politics! Often at the end of a day I would stop by her office to chat, and after I left Purdue we would exchange the occasional email; on my return visits talking with Charlotte was something I always looked forward to. I am sorry to hear this sad news but the world is a richer place because of her intelligence and compassion.

Rest in Peace Aunt Charlotte. I was too young, and geographically too far away to get to know her well, and reading this beautiful piece makes me realize the amazing woman she was. But I do remember her kindness. Sending love to all of you in this time of mourning. Your cousin, Suzanne
