Charles W. Mikels, Jr. of Lafayette, Indiana born August 2, 1924 passed away on October 28, 2011 at the age of 87. He was the son of Charles W. Mikels (deceased) and Beulah Carr (deceased). He married Laura E. Walters on October 25, 1946 who survives.
He is survived by one son, George Mikels and his wife, Mary, of Universal City, Texas and two grandsons, Chad Mikels, Leander, Texas and Greg Mikels, Universal City, Texas. He was a Coast Guard veteran of World War II, serving on a LST in the Pacific Theatre. He grew up on what?s known as Doc?s Corner on SR 43 North and graduated from Battleground High School, received his Bachelors degree at Canterbury College in Danville, Indiana and his masters degree from Indiana University. He was a teacher and principal at Dillsboro High School from 1949 to 1963 and instrumental in construction of the current building that houses Dillsboro Elementary school. A principal and superintendent at Paoli School Corporation from 1963-1969 and oversaw the construction of the current Paoli High School. He was the Superintendent of Tippecanoe School Corporation from 1969 to 1975, and oversaw the building of McCutcheon High School, and served one year as Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum before returning to the classroom as a business teacher at McCutcheon High School from 10 years where he received the teacher of the year award. As a principal and superintendent, he oversaw the construction of numerous schools in all three school corporations.
He was a member of the Presbyterian churches in Dillsboro and Paoli. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion and Fraternal Order of the Eagles. Charles was elected State President of the Indiana Fraternal of the Eagles in 1998. At Eagles Aeire 347, he served in many of the officers positions as well as the coordinator for Eagles Bingo for numerous years. He was an avid fan of the Cincinnati Reds and the Indiana Hoosiers. He enjoyed bowling, walking, teaching and Euchre.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Dale Mikels and sister Mary Catherine Zeck.
Visitation 1 hour prior to a 2:30 PM service on Tuesday at Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel 400 Twyckenham Blvd. J. William Overbay officiating. Interment will be in Riverview Cemetery, Monticello, IN. Those wishing may contribute to Brady Lane Church of Christ.
