Charles L. Haan, 90
Charles L. Haan, 90, of Lafayette, died at 9:50 p.m. Tuesday, May 24, 2011, at St. Elizabeth Central.
He was born May 19, 1921, in Tippecanoe County, to the late John H. and Mary Jenners Haan, and graduated from Battle Ground High School.
He was a staff sergeant in the Army, 128th Infantry 32nd Division from September 1944 until December 1945. He served at Sou Philipines (Liberation) Luzon. Having received the Distinguished Unit Badge, Victory Medal, World War II Asiatic -Pacific Theater Ribbon with two Bronze Stars; Philipine Liberation Ribbon With one Bronze Star; Good Conduct Medal and a Purple Heart.
On Sept. 25, 1940, he married Dorothy M. Smith in Lafayette, and she survives.
Mr. Haan had farmed, was a cattle salesman at Producers Marketing, and was the administator at the Tippecanoe Villa.
He was a member of Church of the Blessed Sacrament in West Lafayette.
He enjoyed fishing, camping, making his own wine, traveling, and his trips to Alaska. Most of all, he enjoyed his time spent with his family.
Surviving besides his wife, Dorothy M. Haan; are sons, Tom Haan (wife: Jan) of Stillwater, Okla., Bob Haan (wife: Ellie) of Lafayette, Don Haan (wife: Frances) of Oklahoma City and Fred Haan (wife: Judy) of West Lafayette.
Also surviving are 18 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Jane Haan of Romney. Preceded in death by a son, William D. Haan, in 2009, and a granddaughter, Donna Frances Horsley.
Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Friday, May 27, 2011, at Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel, with Rosary at 7:30 p.m. Funeral Mass, 10 a.m. Saturday at Church of the Blessed Sacrament, with Fr. David Buckles officiating. Burial at St. Boniface Cemetery with military rites.
