Charles “Charlie” Earl Long, age 82, of Lafayette, died Monday, June 5, 2017, at Franciscan Health Lafayette. He was born September 1, 1934, in Murphysboro, Jackson County, IL, to Milliard C. and Lucille A. (Dye) Long.

In 1952, Charles graduated from Cisne Community High School in Cisne, Wayne County, IL. He attended Southern Illinois University from 1952-55 and graduated from Eastern Illinois University in 1957.Charles married Ruth Jeanette Steiner on September 18, 1965, in Lafayette, they were members of St. Lawrence Catholic Church.Charles worked at Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN, from 1957-60 and 1962-96.

Charles enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren; volunteer activities at Purdue's Visitors Information Center and Franciscan Health Lafayette's Guest Services; having coffee with friends; yardwork; and fishing.

Charles is survived by his wife, Ruth; his children Diane P. Johnson (husband Trent) of West Lafayette, Sheila A. Howell (husband Thomas) of Fishers, and Michael C. Long of Lafayette; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and his brother Phillip R. Long (wife Joan) of North Port, FL.

Visitation Thursday June 8, 2017 from 9:30-11:30 am Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel followed by funeral at 11:30am Fr. Eric Underwood officiating. Burial at Tippecanoe Memory Gardens. Family request memorial contributions to St Lawrence Catholic Church.
