Catherine A. “Cathy” Weliky, 57, of West Lafayette, died Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009, at her residence, after a battle with cancer.
Born Oct. 11, 1952, in Rensselaer, she was the daughter of Jeannette Nesius Blackhall and the late Gordon Blackhall.
She grew up in Rensselaer, graduating from Rensselaer Central High School in 1970. She went on to graduate from Purdue University with a master?s degree in elementary education. She then taught for several years.
On Aug. 12, 1978, she married William E. “Stretch” Weliky, and he preceded her in death. She enjoyed traveling with her husband, and the couple had lived in Wisconsin, California, Seattle and Utah.
Surviving with her mother are a son, Gordon W. Weliky; sisters, Kimberly A. Blackhall of Indianapolis, Julie Birkmeyer (husband: Barry) of Kansas City, Kan., and Kelly Bocwinski (husband: Greg) of Hampton, Va.
Also surviving are several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by a sister, Sue A. Gilmore. Cathy passed onto eternal life with her family beside her. She was a truly amazing wife, mother, sister, aunt, friend and teacher. Her son was the joy of her life, and the caring love and endless devotion she bestowed on him will never be forgotten. Cathy was so important to so many different people, and she will never be forgotten.
Visitation 5-8 p.m. (EST) Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009, at Soller-Baker West Lafayette Chapel, 1184 Sagamore Parkway West, West Lafayette, with Rosary at 4:45 p.m. (EST). Friends will be received 1 hour prior to an 11 a.m. (EST) Mass on Monday, Nov. 16, 2009, at St. Augustine Catholic Church, 318 N. McKinley Ave., Rensselaer, Fr. Tim Knepper officiating. Interment at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
