Catherine A. Weliky

Catherine A. “Cathy” Weliky, 57, of West Lafayette, died Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009, at her residence, after a battle with cancer.
Born Oct. 11, 1952, in Rensselaer, she was the daughter of Jeannette Nesius Blackhall and the late Gordon Blackhall.
She grew up in Rensselaer, graduating from Rensselaer Central High School in 1970. She went on to graduate from Purdue University with a master?s degree in elementary education. She then taught for several years.
On Aug. 12, 1978, she married William E. “Stretch” Weliky, and he preceded her in death. She enjoyed traveling with her husband, and the couple had lived in Wisconsin, California, Seattle and Utah.
Surviving with her mother are a son, Gordon W. Weliky; sisters, Kimberly A. Blackhall of Indianapolis, Julie Birkmeyer (husband: Barry) of Kansas City, Kan., and Kelly Bocwinski (husband: Greg) of Hampton, Va.
Also surviving are several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by a sister, Sue A. Gilmore. Cathy passed onto eternal life with her family beside her. She was a truly amazing wife, mother, sister, aunt, friend and teacher. Her son was the joy of her life, and the caring love and endless devotion she bestowed on him will never be forgotten. Cathy was so important to so many different people, and she will never be forgotten.
Visitation 5-8 p.m. (EST) Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009, at Soller-Baker West Lafayette Chapel, 1184 Sagamore Parkway West, West Lafayette, with Rosary at 4:45 p.m. (EST). Friends will be received 1 hour prior to an 11 a.m. (EST) Mass on Monday, Nov. 16, 2009, at St. Augustine Catholic Church, 318 N. McKinley Ave., Rensselaer, Fr. Tim Knepper officiating. Interment at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

I don&t know if you remember me or not, but we were neighbors in Salt Lake City. Jake sent me this link. I am so sorry to hear about your mother. She was such a special person. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I wish the best for you.

Cathy was such a great friend to me in high school. We shared so many good times together. I have so many good memories of us going to football games and other school activities. We worked on the yearbook, "Chaos" together our senior year. So many of my friends abandoned it when the work got difficult, but Cathy hung in there and worked hard on the yearbook to make it successful. When she made a commitment she stuck by it. I hate it that we lost touch over the years. Now , at least, she is with her husband, her sister, her cousin and my dear friend Pat Brown, and other loved ones. My heartfelt sympathies go out to Gordon, Jay, and the rest of her family.
