Betty J. Schoenhals, 77, of West Lafayette, died at 8:58 p.m. Wednesday, May 18, 2011, at St. Elizabeth Central hospital in Lafayette from pneumonia due to complications of Alzheimer?s disease.
She was born May 24, 1933, in Berkley, Mich. She graduated from Berkley High School in 1951 and from Michigan State Normal College (now Eastern Michigan University) in 1956.
She married Robert Schoenhals in 1956 in Royal Oak, Mich.
Mrs. Schoenhals taught at Taft Elementary School in Wayne, Mich., from 1956 until 1960. She and her husband moved to West Lafayette in 1960 when he became a faculty member at Purdue University. She was employed by Purdue for many years, retiring in 1998.
She was a member of St. John?s Episcopal Church, where she volunteered at the food pantry and at one time sang in the choir. She was also a member of the Lafayette chapter of the International Association of Adminstrative Professionals and was Member of the Year in 1996.
She enjoyed reading, music, playing bridge, walking, traveling and attending social functions, concerts and other performances.
Surviving with her husband is a daughter, Karen Schoenhals of Hollywood, Fla.
A son, Glenn, preceded her in death.
A memorial service will be held at St. John?s Episcopal Church in Lafayette on Saturday, June 18, at 11 a.m.
