A. Jeanne Grenat, a long time Lafayette and West Lafayette resident, died at 7:15 a.m. Monday morning March 15, 2010 in Yellow Rose Hospice Care at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana. Jeanne was born on October 27, 1920 to the late Robert Lucas Mehegan and Irene Johnson Mehegan. Although born in Lafayette, Jeanne moved to San Antonio, Texas with the Mehegan family in her childhood. She graduated from high school and business college while living in San Antonio.
Returning to Lafayette in 1940, Jeanne became employed as a secretary with the Teamsters Union office where she met the absolute love of her life and future husband of 37 years, Ivan Charles Grenat. Jeanne and Ivan were married on January 11, 1941 some 14 months preceding Ivan?s March 1942 to September 1945 service in the Pacific Theater with the U.S. Navy Seabees during World War II. Jeanne and Ivan founded and operated the Ivan C. Grenat Trucking Company following her husband?s return from the war and their company supported the construction of roads, state highways and interstate systems throughout the State of Indiana. Jeanne additionally supported her husband in his service as Lafayette Street Commissioner within the William Gettings and James Riehle administrations. Ivan preceded her in death on August 28, 1978. Jeanne was also employed as secretary for Joe Riley?s Farmers Insurance Group agency in Lafayette and she retired in 1987.
Jeanne gave birth to 4 sons and 3 daughters over the 1941 ? 1960 time period and she tirelessly supported her extended family throughout her life. She was intelligent, gracious, quiet, humble and resolute in her Catholic faith. Jeanne is survived by daughters Judith Vanderwielen (husband Larry), Diane Slaughterbeck (husband Earl) and Lisa Vandeventer (husband Norman) of Lafayette and sons Terrence Grenat (wife Chun Cha) of Valdosta, Georgia and David Grenat (wife Jan) of West Lafayette. Ten grandchildren, seven step grandchildren, eleven great grand children and sixteen step great grandchildren additionally survive her. Jeanne was also preceded in death by 2 sons, William Grenat (1983) and John Grenat (1996), 3 granddaughters Angelec Vandeventer (1984), Carrie Slaughterbeck (1997) and Sandie Slaughterbeck Skoog (2002), and a brother Robert L. Mehegan Jr. (1972).
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Lafayette at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday morning, April 17, 2010. Visitation will occur prior to the mass ? beginning at 8:30 a.m. Interment will take place at St. Boniface Cemetery immediately following Jeanne?s mass. Jeanne so loved her dogs that according to her request all those wishing to provide financial contributions do so in Jeanne?s name to the Almost Home Humane Society, 1705 South 2nd Street, Lafayette, Indiana, 47905 in lieu of sending flowers to the family.
